California May be a Blue State ...

... but how liberal is it really? The general attitude towards Proposition 8 passing is sadness and disappointment. Think what you want about homosexuality, but explain to me why gay marriage should be banned, especially when hetero marriage doesn't have impressive statistics.

I support gay marriage as well. After all, how else is Riv going to get married?! lol

Seriously, though, I too would like to hear a reason, other than the old bible says one man and one woman business.

Exactly. The bible says a lot of things, but people treat it like an a la carte menu to further their own agendas.

Right on Nora! Look what passed in Arkansas: "A PROPOSED ACT PROVIDING THAT A MINOR MAY NOT BE ADOPTED OR PLACED IN A FOSTER HOME IF THE INDIVIDUAL SEEKING TO ADOPT OR TO SERVE AS A FOSTER PARENT IS COHABITING WITH A SEXUAL PARTNER OUTSIDE OF A MARRIAGE WHICH IS VALID UNDER THE CONSTITUTION AND LAWS OF THIS STATE; STATING THAT THE FOREGOING PROHIBITION APPLIES EQUALLY TO COHABITING OPPOSITE-SEX AND SAME-SEX INDIVIDUALS; STATING THAT THE ACT WILL NOT AFFECT THE GUARDIANSHIP OF MINORS; DEFINING “MINOR” TO MEAN AN INDIVIDUAL UNDER THE AGE OF EIGHTEEN (18) YEARS; STATING THAT THE PUBLIC POLICY OF THE STATE IS TO FAVOR MARRIAGE, AS DEFINED BY THE CONSTITUTION AND LAWS OF THIS STATE, OVER UNMARRIED COHABITATION WITH REGARD TO ADOPTION AND FOSTER CARE; FINDING AND DECLARING ON BEHALF OF THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE THAT IT IS IN THE BEST INTEREST OF CHILDREN IN NEED OF ADOPTION OR FOSTER CARE TO BE REARED IN HOMES IN WHICH ADOPTIVE OR FOSTER PARENTS ARE NOT COHABITING OUTSIDE OF MARRIAGE; PROVIDING THAT THE DIRECTOR OF THE DEPARTMENT OF HUMAN SERVICES SHALL PROMULGATE REGULATIONS CONSISTENT WITH THE ACT; AND PROVIDING THAT THE ACT APPLIES PROSPECTIVELY BEGINNING ON JANUARY 1, 2009."

This basically makes it impossible for a gay couple to adopt in the state. I didn't know your sexual preference made you an unfit parent.

You may have seen this, but they're not conceding it yet:

Yes is 400,000 votes ahead, but they say there could be as many as 4 million absentee ballots still out there. It could still go the other way.

I get that from the slog (the stranger weblog http://slog.thestranger.com/) which I keep in my google reader along with SWC so I'll be current on Savage's latest and Dominic Holden's "week on drugs" posts. It's worth keeping an eye on. The feed is here for all SWCers who use a feed reader:

Uh, that is some disheartening information, Slippy.

Luke, thanks for the information. I think we'll all be watching that unravel.

To support homo marriage, read this weeks Savage:

I just read it while listening to "The Wicked Game". It gives that song a whole new meaning. If you don't have the song handy, think of it while reading that column.

Oh and read Dan Savage's books on adopting a kid with his boyfriend. Read all of Savage's books, you'll be glad you did.

I'm drinking rye whiskey tonight in honor of our new president, actually because it's been a fucker of a week.

I've had a few.

I'll leave you all with that thought.

@mike - This coming from the man that dwells in the land of steers and queers....I don't see any horns on your head.

Ok, you two. Take it out on each other in bed like Dave and Maddie Moonlighting-style.

Luke, you can drunk-comment any time. You're always informative and entertaining. I miss my fish-crack partner-in-gluttony!

So, word on the street is people are protesting majorly in Cali. It's a close call, with roughly half the California pop voting yes, the other voting no. The counting isn't over yet. Hope and citizen action worked for Obama's campaign. Let's see if it works for overturning the 'yes' on Prop 8.

Today, I came across this: http://tinyurl.com/5vjrls. It seems that several people's issue revolves around the idea of children and how they might be adversely affected.

Personally, I find that argument ridiculous. Imo, it comes down to having loving parents, regardless of what their sexual affliation is. Ellen is right though, it is amazing how far we have come in terms of equality and yet how far away we still are.

I was watching the View today which I know I should be slapped for watching, but they were talking about Prop 8 and said that the reason it passed was due to the influx of minority voters who came out to vote for Obama were heavily influenced by their churches to vote it in. First off they are told that homosexuality is wrong and therefore it is their Christian duty to not allow this to happen, but also that it would be taught to their children that it is okay for two people of the same sex to love each other.

So, although it was amazing that so many people came out to vote -- in this case it was a tragedy, because they vote in a liberal president, but then fall to the other side when it comes to seeing people as equals, because how can they let such sins be allowed. No matter what you say -- there is not a very strict line between church and state.

That's why I am staring my own country. You can marry who or whatever you want, as long as it doesn't harm anyone outside of the two consenting parties. Also, most people who have no common sense will be executed.

Ooh, Rathertoland. I want to be a citizen!
